nixie and julian I loved Nixie’s off handed sense of humor, sarcasm and even her manner of dress, but she just didn’t have a brain and I couldn’t buy it. It also didn’t help that Nixie was written as a 5ft very petite 25yr old that everyone miss took for a kid…of course it always helps when one stomps their foot to proclaim their arrival into adulthood. What exasperated the matter was Julian. He was very highly educated (lawyer) physically fit and a vampire. At some point the reader has to be able to understand the attraction Julian has for Nixie. I didn’t find anything attractive about her.
Hold that thought and lets go to the upside of the book. There are some really funny parts with some laugh out loud terminology. In addition, this author can write a sex scene….STOP & WARNING. Speed bump here for me. I enjoy my romance scenes hot (K.Cole,Laurston,Showalter,Silver,Howel) BUT there is hot and there is nasty. For me there was to much usage on the word PU$&Y. BUTT (Punn intended) The show stopper was when Julian suck his finger in Nixie’s AZZ…it caused me to make a dolphin sound and slam the book shut. I may need therapy. So for me I was only able to finish 25%. Finally, the locations of these events were not well thought out. On a sidewalk?! You will be caught in a small town. Park, yard, golf course, grave yard…maybe not! Author just didn’t think it through.

I only discovered urban fantasy in the last 18 months. I’ve tried to find well-written books by reading the reviews. This one had all positive reviews, but it was truly awful. This is a porno sex book with vampires that throws in a little plot on the side–very little plot. And the sex is not particularly appealing. The heroine talks and thinks about sex all the time in between thinking, “now, did he bite me?” or “did I see him tear those men apart?” And then she decides, probably not. Dumb.
And the sex instead of being exciting is eyebrow raising. For example, if I can say this delicately, Nixie is described as being a wild-dressing girl with tight jeans, so of course, the hero, aka vampire, manages to stick his hands down the front and back of her jeans to pleasure her outside while walking down the sidewalk. Ahh, tight jeans? On a sidewalk? That was the funny part of this book, my disbelief at how bad it was.

I found this book by accident but what a great find. Nixie is a wonderful heroine with lots of moxie. Julian is, well, a hot, huge, sexy vampire. This story is hilarious, sexy, fast paced and just a pleasure to read. Mary Hughes will be added to my autobuy list!

This quirky romance between an unlikely couple (a tiny polka-punk musician and a staid lawyer, who happens to be a sexy, powerful vampire!) draws you in immediately with well thought out characters, a silly and snarky sense of humor, and an all-around good story. I laughed out loud several times and fell in love with Nixie’s friends and family. I hope the author writes more stories about the people in this town!

I enjoyed this book! I thought the characters were well developed. Nixie’s slang got a little confusing but she was cute and fiesty. I would warn though that this book could almost be classified as soft porn. Very graphic love scenes.
