Question:
I have had this overwhelming interest in the paranormal since I was little (when I believe I saw my first ghost), and my dream job since then has been to be a paranormal investigator. The only problem is, I don’t think it’s an actual job…and if it is, it pays very poorly on account of no one ever takes them seriously. Now, before anyone puts me down as a paranoid schizophrenic, I am fully aware that more than half of the paranormal stories these days are most likely hoaxes, but there are still secrets that no one have uncovered before, and it’s that sense of mystery I love. By now, I have accepted the fact that I won’t do this for a living and I’ll end up having a normal job, but I’m still curious as to whether a legitimate paranormal investigator career exists outside of TV.

Well you can be an “investigator of paranormal claims”. But its not a job as such. There is probably only one professional investigator in the US, Joe Nickell. Here is his webby:

I am a paranormal investigator (since 1983). The ‘job’ isn’t a paying gig;it’s a hobby. We are taken seriously by most people now (recent poll said that 64% of Americans believe in ghosts) and we end up helping hundreds of people every year. Paranormal investigations is gaining more recognition and more respect. But, since reputable colleges in the US have omitted parapsychology from their rolls, it’s no longer deemed a profession.

You are correct paranormal investigation is not a job where you get paid. It is a hobby There is a legitimate field as parapsychology but really it is not very common. If you love this you can still stay busy and if you are good at marketing yourself you can earn a living at it but I suggest you start now. the money in paranormal investigating is in writing books, correspondence courses to teach your ways and methods. If you can get a good reputation and become well known you can earn money at weekend workshops. Starting a ghost society and charge membership fees is another way money is made. Ghost walks are very popular right now.
Some people do charge for investigations and do ghost evictions if you excuse the term, but these people are in the same category as the crooked fortune tellers. Now by crooked I mean those who will charge very high fees then claim there is a curse on you and then try and get all your savings. I do not think all fortune tellers are crooked.
